We talked to Sarah Wright Olsen and Anna Schafer—actresses, moms, and co-founders of Bāeo—to find out more about what it was like to launch an organic skincare line for the whole family together. Here, they share their personal journeys, what being bold means to them, and of course, how Birdies help them feel bold, bright, and confident.
What is your definition of bold and how do you incorporate this into your day-to-day?
Anna: To me being bold is being brave, confident, and standing up for your beliefs no matter what. It’s being kind and supporting other people. It’s standing out.
What’s a bold move you’ve made in your life?
Sarah: When I was 18, I packed my car, took all my savings, and moved from Kentucky to Chicago to work as a model and in the commercial business. I knew no one where I was going. I just knew that I wanted to try living on my own and see how long I could make my savings last. I thought I would go for three months and then come home to Kentucky and regroup. Years later, my dad told me he knew when he said goodbye to me that day that it would be the last time I lived at home. It turns out he was right.
What advice would you give future generations of women to live boldly and with purpose?
Sarah: Find the things you love in life and put your energy there. Anna and I created our organic skincare line Bāeo because we were having babies and we wanted a clean, organic, plant-based line for the whole family. It was a passion of ours, and even though we had never had a business and had no clue where to start, we just kept trying for years until we made it happen.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given about being bold and true to yourself?
Anna: I always remember what my father taught me: Don’t try to please everyone. Be humble, have integrity in everything you do, and speak up for yourself and those who don’t have a voice.
How do Birdies make you feel bright, bold, and confident?
Sarah: Birdies are such a comfy shoe you can wear with anything. It’s the perfect slip-on to dress up or down. I find myself wearing dresses a lot, and I can easily throw them on and feel put together.
Anna: They are effortless and chic. They make me feel sexy and confident.
